Northern Ireland transport firm seeks 60 drivers to tackle the Christmas rush

One of Northern Ireland’s biggest transport firms – Montgomery Transport – is recruiting 60 new drivers ahead of the Christmas rush.

The firm, which is part of Ballvesey Holdings, is looking for drivers for full loads, distribution and bulk tanks.

Montgomery Transport, which is based in Newtownabbey, said there was a growing shortage of HGV drivers – and that the driver dearth could hamper growth of the economy.

Stephen Marshall, director and general manager, said: “With the pick-up and delivery of Christmas stock due to kick in over the coming weeks, it’s a very busy time for Montgomery operations and these new positions will offer drivers the opportunity to launch a long and productive career in the logistical services sector.

“The road haulage industry is the lifeblood of any economy and the HGV driver shortage is a crisis which must be addressed immediately – or the wider economy will suffer greatly.”

He said Montgomery’s distribution arm typically delivered over 15,000 items a week, including consumer and pharmaceuticals.

It also moves around 1,500 full loads between the UK and Ireland every week, while over 300 bulk tankers carry liquid, powder and other items.

Montgomery Transport was founded in 1970, the first company in Ballyvesey Holdings’ transport and logistics division.
